The siege of the Sinjar-mountains in August 2014 by the Islamic State made international headlines, then. This was not the first genocide conducted against the Yazidis. Since many centuries, they are exposed to humiliation, persecution and extermination, living in Muslim majority countries. We try to explore the Yazidy culture, religion, history and the special relationship to Muslim neighbors.
This is a report of Sister Hatune’s trip to the Middle East in February, to several places in Iraq and Turkey. First-hand account of the situation of the Yazidi community, fleeing ISIS, being scattered throughout the area and having endured many atrocities. Although Hatune managed to deliver aid, much more is needed.
First-hand account of Sister Hatune about religious discrimination of Christians and Yazidis – in Germany! She meets people, who have been harassed and threatened in refugee homes in Germany, by the hands of Muslim roommates. This is happening all over Germany. The authorities are unable to cope with the problem – if they see it at all.
The programs of the UNHCR for refugees of the war in Iraq and Syria are underfunded, mostly by the steady increase in refugees. They have doubled in one year, only. It would take an all new aid architecture, a broader approach to solve this crisis. The international community is reacting too slowly, mainly because the donating countries are too busy with their own refugee crises.
Sister Hatune’s report about her Christmas 2015 trip to the Middle East: Bringing thousands of warm blankets to the Yazidiy people in the Sinjar mountains, bringing aid and spiritual support to many needy in several refugee camps in Iraq and Syria, meeting the pope of the Yazidis, the Baba Sheikh.
